About this Award

This fund was initiated in 2004 by the Department of Visual Arts, and was established with the particular generosity of Mrs. Michiko Gagnon along with family and friends of the late Charles Gagnon. This fund was created to help preserve the memory of Charles Gagnon and to honour his profound contribution to Canadian art as both an artist and teacher.

Those who knew Charles Gagnon remember him not only as the artist whose « protean work. holds both the history and the origins of contemporary interdisciplinarity », to quote the citation of the jury which awarded him the 2002 Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. Charles Gagnon was also a highly inspiring teacher. He began his teaching career at Loyola College (now Concordia University) in Montreal and, in 1975, Charles Gagnon joined the Department of Visual in Arts at the University of Ottawa, where he taught photography and media courses until his retirement in 1996. His university colleagues and students were aware that the remarkable energy and rigor that informs Charles Gagnon's paintings, photographs and films was present as well in his interaction with generations of students, many of whom have gone on to contribute significantly to the Canadian and international artistic communities.

The donors thank the Government of Ontario for their matching contributions through its OTSS program.
