Purpose of this Award

Provide financial assistance to a doctoral student in Canadian literature, medieval literature or any other field of English literature at the Department of English of the University of Ottawa.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a person with the protected/refugee status
  2. be registered as a full-time or part-time student in a doctoral program at the Department of English of the University of Ottawa
  3. be studying in Canadian or medieval literature, or if there are no suitable candidates in these two fields, in any other field of English literature
  4. be an Ontario resident, as per OSAP rules
  5. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa

About this Award

This fund was established by Avie Bennett, President and Chairman of McClelland and Stewart Inc. in honour of David Staines. Former Chair of the Department of English during 1990-93, Dr. Staines was appointed ViceDean of Arts in 1994, acting Dean the following year and confirmed as Dean in the Fall of 1996.  Academic, author, editor and literary critic, he is widely known and highly respected in Canadian literary circles. A founding member of the jury of the Giller Prize, awarded annually to best work of Canadian fiction, he is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Giller Foundation and the General Editor since 1988 of the New Canadian Library published by McClelland and Stewart Inc. The donor thanks the Government of Ontario for its matching contribution.
