Purpose of this Award

This bursary aims to support Indigenous students who demonstrate financial need who are attending postsecondary programs and/or training programs at either Ontario publicly-assisted colleges or universities or approved Indigenous postsecondary education and training institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have protected person or refugee status
  2. be a resident of Ontario, as per OSAP rules
  3. be registered full or part time in an undergraduate or graduate program
  4. provide documented proof of Indigenous identity, in accordance with the requirements of the administrative procedure governing the eligibility of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students for scholarships and reserved places at the University of Ottawa
  5. demonstrate financial need
Note: The applicants travel costs between their remote Indigenous community and the postsecondary institution is an eligible expense covered under this bursary.

How to Apply

Submitted in the Online Scholarship and Bursaries portal, accessible via uoZone, and must include:

  1. the Financial Questionnaire
  2. documented proof of Indigenous identity, in accordance with the requirements of the University of Ottawa Eligibility for Focused Admissions, Scholarships, and Bursaries for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis People administrative procedure
  3. the Indigenous Postsecondary Education and Training Bursary Application
  4. documentation of the travel costs between the applicant's remote Indigenous community and postsecondary institution (if applicable)
The travel cost is an eligible expense/financial need under the bursary, and may include airplane/train/bus/ferry/boat fares, taxi, private vehicle, hotels for layovers, etc.

NOTE

A remote Indigenous community for the purposes of this application is defined as a remote community that is either at least 350 km away from the nearest service centre or doesn’t have year-long road access to a service centre. 


About this Award

The Ontario Indigenous Student Bursary was established in 2005-2006 by the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security as part of the Government of Ontario’s Access to Opportunities Strategy.
