Purpose of this Award

Financially support a student at the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with the protected/refugee status or an international student
  2. be registered as a full-time student at the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa
  3. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa

In the case of multiple candidates meeting the base requirements, the selection committee will select the recipient based on the award policies and standard criteria used by the Faculty of Education at the time of selection.

About this Award

Jean-Luc Bernard has been director of education for the Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest from April 2002 to February 2011. Under his skilled leadership, the school board has had many achievements, including improving students' results, opening new schools, offering an inclusive welcome to newcomers, and providing a cutting-edge model of professional development, school-to-work transition and much more.

Despite his busy schedule, he has been involved in many major issues. In 2007-2008, he co-chaired a provincial advisory committee on formal dispute resolution regarding programs and services offered to children with special needs by the Ontario Ministry of Education In 2005, he co-chaired an expert roundtable for the ministry on strategies for teaching literacy and numeracy to exceptional pupils. Until recently, he served on the board of the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario and the Minister's Advisory Council on Special Education. 

He chairs the boards of the Centre franco-ontarien de ressources pédagogiques (CFORP) and the Regroupement national des directions générales de l'éducation (RNDGÉ). He also currently sits on the boards of the Centre de services de santé de Peel-Halton, the Centre francophone de Toronto and the Réseau franco-santé du sud de l'Ontario. 

Passionate about education and making students a priority, Mr. Bernard holds a master's of education from the University of Ottawa. He has brilliantly handled every challenge he has faced. Before occupying his current position, he was a class teacher, academic adviser, education officer, superintendant of education and associate director of education.
