About this Award

The Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa was founded in 1968 and has since developed a reputation for interdisciplinary and critical criminological scholarship that advances alternative ways of seeing and responding to criminalized acts and other social harms. This orientation characterizes much of the Department's work today despite the growth of managerial and administrative criminologies elsewhere, along with the rise of explicitly exclusionary and punitive state policies and practices that purport to address crime and security. The Innovative Criminology Scholarship was established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Department of Criminology. Every year, the Scholarship will be awarded in the name of one of the Department's past professors and staff members, or a community group or leader who has pushed the boundaries of the discipline, mirroring the topic of the innovative research being undertaken by the successful applicant.
