Purpose of this Award

Provide financial assistance to University of Ottawa medical students who demonstrate the highest level of professionalism in their interactions with patients.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be registered as a full-time student of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa
  2. be an Ontario resident, as per OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) rules
  3. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa

About this Award

This fund was established in 2005 by family and friends of Dr. Mark Hardy on the occasion of his 50th birthday. The fund was initiated by Dr. Rose Goldstein, then Vice Dean, Academic Affairs, Faculty of Medicine in honour of Dr. Hardy's 50th birthday on June 7, 2006. Dr. Hardy trained in London, England (University of London Medical School) and undertook his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto and surgery training at the University of Ottawa. This was followed by a 2.5 year fellowship in Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital at the University of Texas at Houston. He practiced surgical oncology at the Ottawa General Hospital and then at the Ottawa Hospital from 1987-2007. Dr. Hardy has always been known for excellence in clinical care, exemplified by excellent communication skills and professional interactions with patients.
This award was therefore established to honour those attributes so appreciated by Dr. Hardy's patients and colleagues, and to encourage the development of these skills and competencies by future medical professionals. Family and friends thank the Government of Ontario who helped create this fund through its generous matching contributions.
