Purpose of this Award

To assist undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa who meet the OSOTF terms.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be registered as full-time undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. Priority will be given to third year students
  2. meet the Ontario residency requirement, as per OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) rules
  3. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa
  4. have a record of good academic achievement

About this Award

This fund was established in 1997 by Dr. Dorothy M. Horwood (’73). Dorothy was grateful for the 10 years she spent studying and doing research in the medical sciences at the University of Ottawa. She also understood the difficulties of financing such an undertaking.

Dorothy was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto at age 12. She graduated from the University of Toronto, Victoria College, in 1948 with an BA. She then moved to Ottawa and married John L. Horwood, a research scientist with the Mines Branch of the federal government. 

After her three children started school, she worked part time at the University of Ottawa in the chemistry and medical student labs. This piqued her interest in the medical sciences and she enrolled at the University in 1965. Dorothy graduated in 1968 with a MSc, which included two years of heart research in the physiology department with Dr. Beznak (who later became the dean of medicine). She continued her studies and research in the biochemistry department and earned her PhD in 1973. 

From 1973 to 1975, she received a grant to continue her research on pharmacology and the heart, including the toxic effects of cadmium. In 1976, she went to work in the Bureau of Drug Research and was appointed the same year as a drug evaluator at the Bureau of Drugs, Health Protection Branch. She reviewed and evaluated the scientific data for new drug submissions and made recommendations concerning safety and efficacy for marketing. This was a career she enjoyed until her retirement in 1991. 

After she retired, Dorothy continued to be interested in many pursuits until she passed away in 2022. She wrote on the topic of CO2 and climate change. She published a book about her mother's life in the Eastern Townships. She was an accomplished pianist and bridge player and enjoyed many summers at Georgian Bay.
