Purpose of this Award

Provide financial assistance to University of Ottawa medical students who qualify under the terms established by the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund. Within those guidelines, the donor requests this fund to be directed to students who may have exceptional financial needs or unusual circumstances, and further requests that if necessary, the awarding of this scholarship may be used to enhance other bursaries or scholarships, and not to preclude the recipient from receiving other financial assistance.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a person with the protected/refugee status
  2. be registered as a full-time undergraduate student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa
  3. be an Ontario resident, as per OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) rules
  4. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa
  5. have completed one year with passing grade in all units of study

This fund was established in 1997 by Dr. Joseph Robert Berecz, graduate of the class of 1963, and Dr. Steven Joseph Berecz, graduate of the class of 1990.

The donors thank the Alumni Association of the University of Ottawa and the Government of Ontario for their matching contributions.
