About this Award
Dr. Anawati's journey to becoming a physician in Canada was marked by perseverance and dedication. After immigrating from Alexandria, Egypt, he faced numerous challenges, including adapting to a new education system. His connection with a fellow doctor from Alexandria who resided in Sturgeon Falls led him to that rural community to practise medicine. There, he met his wife, Jocelyne, who grew up in the region.
In Sturgeon Falls, the couple was deeply involved in promoting medical education and supporting local healthcare initiatives for over 45 years. Dr. Anawati also played a pivotal role in establishing the Northeastern Ontario Family Medicine Residency program, through the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University, ensuring that future generations of Francophone doctors are wellequipped to meet the diverse needs of their communities.
This scholarship stands as a testament to Jean and Jocelyne’s unwavering dedication to their community, the Francophonie and their vision for a healthier future.
