About this Award
This scholarship
was generously created by the Civil Law Class of 1966 for their 50th
anniversary class reunion, in memory of classmate Jock Turcot, president of the
University of Ottawa Students’ Union, who tragically passed away in 1965 at the
age of 22.
As president, Jock quickly stood out because of his
charisma and vision. He had a dream: to create a centre for students that would
bring all of the campus’ essential daily services together under one roof. Jock
also wanted to create a meeting place for students, professors and staff. He
wanted the setting to be more laid back than classrooms and administrative
offices. Sadly, Jock did not see his dream come true. He died tragically in a
car accident on Christmas Day 1965. Jean-Pierre Plouffe, his classmate from the
Class of 1966, became president of the Students’ Union.
Fortunately, the vision for a social centre that Jock
held so dear did not die with his passing. His dream finally became reality in
1974, with the inauguration of the Jock Turcot University Centre. In 1991, to
mark the 25th anniversary of Jock’s death, a commemorative plaque was unveiled
in the centre that so proudly bears his name.
