Purpose of this Award
To support a First Nations student studying in the LLL or JD program at the Faculty of Law, University
of Ottawa, who has demonstrated a commitment to the development of the law as it pertains to the
First Nations communities.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidate must:
- be enrolled as a full-time student in the LLL or JD program at the Faculty of Law
- demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa
- have a good academic record
- provide a certified copy of an Indian status card that includes the name of a registered band or written confirmation of membership from a federally-recognized band
- have contributed to First Nations groups in Canada
Note: If no recipient is selected in a given year, the amount will be carried over to the
following year.
How to Apply
Submitted in the Online Scholarship and Bursaries portal, accessible via uoZone, and must include:
- the Financial Questionnaire
- a certified copy of an Indian status card that includes the name of a registered band or written confirmation of membership from a federally-recognized band
- a letter outlining affiliation with and contribution to First Nations groups in Canada (max. 500 words)
Note: Applicants’ transcripts in their files at the Faculty of Law will be added to their applications.
About this Award
This scholarship honours the memory of Sam Odjick, who died tragically in 1987. His Bachelor of Law
degree from the University of Ottawa was awarded posthumously in June 1988. He also attended
Carleton University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts.
