Purpose of this Award
Eligibility Criteria
The candidate must:
- be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with protected or refugee status, or an international student
- be admitted as a full-time undergraduate student in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, of the University of Ottawa
- intend to use their law degree to help combat racism
- be a member of the Black community
be a member of a racialized community
OR
provide documented proof of Indigenous identity, in accordance with the requirements of the University of Ottawa Eligibility for Focused Admissions, Scholarships, and Bursaries for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis People administrative procedure
How to Apply
Submitted in the Online Scholarship and Bursaries portal, accessible via uoZone, and must include:
- a letter (max. 500 words) describing how the applicant plans to use their law degree to help combat racism
- a statement from the applicant self-identifying as a member of a racialized community as per the Ontario Human Rights Commission policy and guidelines on racism and racial discrimination section 2.1 (“‘Race’ — A social construct”) (if applicable)
About this Award
Beyond the financial assistance provided by this scholarship, Scotiabank will provide recipients with access to unique engagement opportunities, including mentorship, an interview for a co-op or internship after the first year of the program and attendance at a “Day on Bay Street” one-day symposium for students in the third year of the program to meet Scotiabank executives and members of the legal community.
