About this Award
This endowment fund was created in 2011 by the Estate of Margaret Olsiak Hudák, through a generous bequest. Born in Canada to immigrants from Slovakia, Mrs. Hudák grew up in Port Colborne, Ontario. Drawn to the great city of Ottawa, Margaret Olsiak enrolled at the University of Ottawa in 1958, where she successfully completed the Nursing program and, later on, the Psychopedagogy Master's program in the Faculty of Education. She was able to work as a nurse after her initial training, helping to finance her continuing studies.
Afterwards, she accepted a teaching contract at her alma mater's School of Nursing, rising to the rank of Assistant Professor. Margaret Olsiak married Mr. John Hudák, an immigrant from Slovakia, on December 31, 1977, becoming a wife, step-mother, and grandmother all at the same time.
She completed her teaching contract, and then joined her new family in Welland, Ontario in mid-1978. She continued working in the Niagara region for some time, including at a hospital in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and spent the rest of her life near where she grew up. Mrs. Hudák and her husband, who pre-deceased her, played a role in establishing the Chair in Slovak History and Culture at the University of Ottawa.
With this scholarship, Mrs. Hudák wishes to help students with financial aid, in the same way she was helped during her studies at the University of Ottawa, and especially students who, like her and her family, are immigrants or children of immigrants.
The University of Ottawa sincerely thanks Mrs. Hudák posthumously for her generosity and her commitment to its students, as well as the Government of Ontario, which helped create this fund through its generous matching contribution.
