About this Award

This scholarship was established in 2001 by Yolande Maranger Sylvain's children on the occasion of her 75th birthday. Mrs. Maranger Sylvain graduated from the University of Ottawa's School of Nursing in 1947 and immediately began to work in the Ottawa General Hospital Emergency Room.

Later, she was the nurse to Dr. Patrick Maloney who had a paediatrician practice in Ottawa; she claims that this was a wonderful apprenticeship to being the mother of six children. Mrs. Maranger Sylvain is married to the Honourable John Sylvain (BCom'50) who was Senator from October 1990 to January 1996. The family members thank the Government of Ontario who helped create this fund through its generous matching contributions.
