About this Award

In memory of Andrew Moffitt (1975-1998), the Faculty of Engineering and Andrew's family have set up this scholarship fund. Andy's young life was stolen from him on December 23, 1998 when he was murdered trying to be a good Samaritan in breaking up a fight at Coyote's Restaurant. He was celebrating the end of exams with his friends, hours before he was to drive home to spend Christmas with his family.

Andy was a 23 year old Computer Engineering student at the University of Ottawa. Andy enjoyed many sports including softball, golf, hockey, football, tennis, darts, pool, snooker and skiing. He also enjoyed working on his Linux workstation, playing chess, programming, experimenting with micro-controllers and playing multiplayer computer games like Quake2.

Andy was off to a great start, working part time at Nortel as a firmware designer and was soon to graduate as an Engineer, he had such a great life with so much potential. Andy always looked out for others, never hesitating to take the time to lend a hand even if it put him at a disadvantage, and that is how he lost his life. This scholarship will ensure that his sacrifice will be known for generations to come and at the same time help others with similar interests in computers and technology.

The founders of this fund appreciate the matching contribution of the Alumni Association of the University of Ottawa and the Government of Ontario through its Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund program.
