About this Award

This scholarship was created in memory of Stéphanie Lacroix, who died on March 10, 2019, at the age of 25 in the downing of an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Nairobi, Kenya. At the time, Stéphanie was a project officer with Canada Service Corps leading a delegation of young Canadians to the United Nations Environment Assembly. Stéphanie’s first international experience was an internship in Mochudi, Botswana, with Stepping Stones International, as part of a uOttawa international development course (DVM 4010 Stage international en développement international). In 2015, she graduated as class valedictorian, with a bachelor’s in globalization and international development. She worked in this field in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Ottawa, with both the United Nations and World University Service of Canada. She was deeply involved at the University of Ottawa, working as a community counsellor, summer orientation guide and residence life co-ordinator, and was a member of the inaugural executive team of the Development Student Association (AÉDSA). As an alumna, she kept in touch with uOttawa and was always happy to return to campus to share her experiences and mentor future graduates of her program.
