About this Award

This bursary was generously created in memory of Jeannette Bennett by a lifelong friend. Jeannette Bennett was born in England during WW2. She grew up in Quebec, and after high school, she completed her registered nurse's training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. In the years following, she earned her BSc in nursing, a nurse practitioner diploma and a master's in education from the University of Ottawa, as well as designation as an extended class nurse (meaning she could order diagnostic tests and prescribe drugs). She worked in midwifery, community care and primary care clinics, and at the Ottawa Public Health Sexual Health Centre, and she taught in the nursing programs at the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College.
When she was working for the City of Ottawa serving street people, her clients would meet not only a nurse but a friend. For 20 years she was at the Salvation Army hostel once a week, engaging with the hundreds having breakfast. She offered anonymous HIV testing but, more importantly, she brought her warmth and caring. She volunteered as a nurse in a refugee camp in Ethiopia and for the last two years of her life, she was part of the life of a Syrian refugee family.
The life of this kind, gentle and beautiful soul ended abruptly on what had been a lovely day, June 30, 2019. While swimming in the lake at her cottage, her heart just stopped beating. Jeannette will not only be remembered for her love of family, of a party, of learning and of travelling, and her loyalty to her friends, she will also be remembered as a truly inspiring example of an open, caring and selfless person, one with a friendly smile and a quiet gentle way about her but also a very strong and determined spirit. Her greatest ability was taking care of the needs of those she met, one person at a time. Never underestimate the power of one.
