Purpose of this Award

The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to WISE student members registered in Engineering at the University of Ottawa.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be registered full-time in Engineering at the University of Ottawa
  2. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Office of the University of Ottawa
  3. be a WISE student member
  4. have demonstrated leadership as a role model for women in the fields of science and engineering

About this Award

This scholarship was established by the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Ottawa Chapter in memory of Dr. Melek Akben who passed away on September 18, 2002, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Dr. Akben joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1987 as an Associate Professor. She was an accomplished researcher in the field of metallurgy and welding, with numerous publications, grants, and contracts to her credit. She was also very engaged in volunteer work both in the academic community and outside; Melek was an active WISE member since 1997. Her colleagues in the Department remember her as a true friend and a very active colleague, who contributed much to the Department. Her sense of humour and outgoing nature made her a welcoming presence for staff and students alike and helped her greatly in her battle with cancer.
