About this Award
Claudia B. Fortin (1928-2011) was the mother of Danielle Fortin, a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Growing up during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Second World War, Claudia Fortin was unable to pursue postsecondary studies. However, she and her husband made sure that their children received the education they never had. Claudia was not only an extraordinary mother to her six children, but was also recognized by her small rural community for her generosity and selflessness. She was well respected for her dedication to helping others and her heartfelt sincerity. Although she gave so much of herself, she did not think she deserved recognition or compliments for it. This scholarship fund aims to honour the memory of Claudia Fortin, a woman who believed in the value of education, effort, self-sacrifice and love.
