About this Award
This bursary was created by Emmanuel N. Florakas (BCom ’95, MBA ’97). He is a senior technology leader, with a specific interest in AI and co-founder of Lixar IT Inc. His grandparents were new Canadians who felt the path to success included formal education. Both Emmanuel’s parents have graduate degrees. His mother was one of three women in her graduating business class in the 1960s.
Emmanuel recalls fondly his Telfer years and those professors and staff who committed to excellence and brought a growth mindset to challenge students to be better people and to thrive in the workforce. These individuals stood out to Emmanuel: Professors Dan Lane, David Zussman, Denis Caro, Edward Pascal, François Julien, Micheál Kelly and Stylianos Perrakis, as well as Chantal Gendron, Matt Archibald, Pat Neri and Sylvie Séguin-Jak.
Furthermore, Emmanuel would like to acknowledge these four individuals: Jean-Louis Schaan, the inspirational International Masters program leader and career mentor during the Lixar startup years; Marc Albert, for his love of Telfer and for showing Emmanuel what being a great boss looked like; Patricia O'Rourke, for her commitment to excellence and helping Emmanuel along his journey; and Peter Koppel, as the accomplishment of being a Koppel TA was a defining moment.
Finally, technology is pervasive, and women are underrepresented in knowledge-based industries. Emmanuel hopes this bursary will play a small part to change that and help a student draw inspiration from Telfer the way he did.
