Purpose of this Award

To support first-year students admitted to the University of Ottawa who demonstrate financial need, have overcome adversity and have graduated from a high school in the National Capital Region, Eastern Ontario (Pembroke to Cornwall to Hawkesbury),  Northern Ontario or Gatineau / West Quebec within the last three years.

 


Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a person with protected or refugee status
  2. be admitted as a first year full-time undergraduate student at the University of Ottawa
  3. demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Financial Aid and Awards Service of the University of Ottawa
  4. has overcome adversity
  5. have graduated from a high school in the National Capital Region, Eastern Ontario (Pembroke to Cornwall to Hawkesbury), Northern Ontario or Gatineau / West Quebec within the last three years
Note: Recipients must maintain a full-time status in an undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa. 

Note: Recipients must be registered as a mentee in a campus mentorship program. After each academic year, they must email a report describing what they learned in the mentorship program to loansandawards@uOttawa.ca. Recipients will be contacted to schedule a meeting in May with a representative from the Financial Aid and Awards Office to discuss their learning experience.  


How to Apply

Submitted in the Online Scholarship and Bursaries portal, accessible via uoZone, and must include:

  1. the Financial Questionnaire
  2. a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae
  3. a letter of reference from an individual who is aware of the adversity the applicant has overcome
  4. a letter (max. 500 words) from the applicant describing the adversity they have overcome

This bursary was generously created by the Joyce Family Foundation in 2024 to support the social, economic and emotional well-being of young Canadians starting full-time undergraduate studies at the University of Ottawa.
