About this Award

The Françoise and Yvan Lepage Scholarship Fund was established by the Département de français in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa.

The fund was created in honour of Yvan G. Lepage, who worked for most of his career in the Département de français at the University of Ottawa as a professor (from 1977 to 2005) and as department chair (1981 ‑ 1982; and 1986 ‑ 1989), as well as in the Faculty of Arts as assistant vice dean and secretary (1989 ‑ 2004). This award also recognizes the contribution Françoise Lepage made to children's literature while working in the same department, as a part-time professor and historian of children's literature, and her involvement in Franco-Ontarian literature.

Yvan's diverse interests are evident in his research topics. His Ph.D. thesis and his early critical editions dealt with French works from the Middle Ages, a period he continued to publish work on throughout the rest of his career. He also had a great interest in two Québec authors, Germaine Guèvremont and Félix-Antoine Savard. Yvan was a FrancoOntarian and the first scholar to devote an entire critical edition to a Franco-Ontarian female author, (Marie-Rose Girard). He also published articles on Franco-Ontarian literature (Michel Thérien, Gilles Lacombe, Bibliothèque canadienne-française, etc.) and wrote a number of reviews. Professor Lepage began his career as a teacher and department chair at the Université de Moncton (1970 ‑ 1977). In 2003, he renewed his ties with this institution and the team of teachers and researchers in the Département de français when they called upon his expertise to produce an edition of classic Acadian works and a complete edition of the works of Germaine Guèvremont.
