Purpose of this Award

Award a scholarship to a student enrolled in the Master of Arts program or the Doctoral program at the Department of Criminology who intends to advance criminal justice reform, social justice or social change through their studies.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with the protected/refugee status or an international student;
  2. be enrolled as a full-time student in the Master of Arts program or the Doctoral program in the Department of Criminology of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ottawa;
  3. demonstrate academic excellence; and
  4. demonstrate the potential to advance criminal justice reform, social justice or social change through participation in research activities and involvement in the community.
Preference will be given to candidates without a large external scholarship or fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Trillium Foundation, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship program, the Fonds de recherche du Québec or other large student award granting agencies.

  1. the Curriculum Vitae on Online Scholarships and Bursaries;
  2. a non-official copy of the applicant’s University of Ottawa transcript and other post-secondary transcripts (where applicable);
  3. a research proposal from the applicant (max. 500 words) detailing how their planned research activities and involvement in the community have the potential to advance criminal justice reform, social justice or social change; and
  4. a letter from a current or past professor (max. 500 words) detailing how the applicant’s past track record demonstrates their potential to advance criminal justice reform, social justice or social change.

About this Award

Ross Hastings began his academic career at St. Francis Xavier University and, in 1975, joined the University of Ottawa. Over the next 41 years, Ross served as a professor and chair of sociology and then criminology as well as vice-dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Not only an accomplished scholar and researcher, Ross was also an active and respected voice in local, national and international crime prevention efforts. He was the inaugural chair of the National Crime Prevention Council and the recipient of many provincial and national awards and commendations. Ross was a founding co-director of the University of Ottawa Institute for the Prevention of Crime. He was a committed advocate for community-based crime prevention and at-risk youth, advising a range of agencies including the European Commission, the RCMP, the Ontario Provincial Police and the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime. A passionate teacher and mentor, he also served on the board of directors for the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa. The Ross Hastings Memorial Scholarship was created by his family, the Department of Criminology and the Faculty of Social Sciences to help support future generations of students who will carry forward his legacy.
