About this Award

This fund was established in 2005 by Dr. Nicole Bégin-Heick and Dr. Hans Heick, in honour of Dr. Bégin-Heick's tenure at and contribution to the University of Ottawa until her retirement. She was appointed to the Department of Biochemistry in 1972 and is currently an Emeritus Professor. She occupied the positions of Dean of Graduate Studies and Research (1989-1994) and Vice-Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Health Sciences, which included Medicine and the other Health Professions (1987-1989). She was Executive Director of the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies and of the Ontario Council on University Research at the Council of Ontario Universities [COU] (1994-1999). More recently (2004-05), she returned briefly to the University as Acting Associate Vice-President Research.

She has been a member of both the MRC and NSERC Councils and was a member of several of their committees as well as serving on boards and committees for numerous other national and provincial bodies. As an independent consultant since 1999, she worked with the three federal granting agencies, Health Canada, Environment Canada, the Canada Research Chairs Program, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, provincial governments, academic associations, and universities, specializing in research and education policy.

The fund initiators sincerely thank the University of Ottawa for matching their contribution under the uOttawa Graduate Fellowship Matching Program.
