For a period covering four years, as long as the awardee remains in good standing and remains registered as a full-time student. At the discretion of the Chairholder, in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the scholarship could be extended for a fifth year. As an additional condition for renewal of the scholarship, the recipient will have to apply for all relevant Provincial and Federal scholarships every year during the duration of the Kule scholarship. If the recipient receives an external scholarship, the value of the Kule Scholarship will be adjusted accordingly, so that the student will receive at least a total of $25,000 (instead of $20,000) per year, plus tuition fees.

Purpose of this Award

The Drs. Peter & Doris Kule Doctoral Scholarship on Contemporary Ukraine will support Canadian and international doctoral students admitted to a doctoral program who display outstanding potential in their field and who did not receive a scholarship from an external agency.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must:

  1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with protected/refugee status or an international student
  2. have applied for registration as a full-time student in a doctoral program at the University of Ottawa
  3. specialize in studies related to contemporary Ukraine in fields associated with the current Chairholder, Ukrainian Studies
  4. have in their thesis advisory committee the holder of the Chair in Ukrainian Studies, who will also act as the supervisor or co-supervisor of the thesis
  5. demonstrate outstanding potential in his/her field of study
  6. not be supported by a competitive external scholarship (e.g. SSHRC, OGS, etc.)
  7. meet the linguistic requirements of their doctoral program

  1. a curriculum vitae
  2. a 1 000-word research proposal
  3. two letters of recommendation sent separately by the referees

About this Award

In the past decade, Drs. Peter and Doris Kule have made an exceptional contribution to the development of Ukrainian studies in Canada. Long recognized as community leaders and philanthropists dedicated to supporting education, the Kules have funded two chairs in Eastern Christian Theology at St. Paul University in Ottawa, two chairs in ethnology at the University of Alberta, and substantially supported the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at Grant MacEwan College and the Ukrainian Diaspora Studies Initiative at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta.

The Kules recognize the unique role of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa in promoting research on contemporary Ukraine. As such, they have generously created an endowed fund that will provide critical financial support to Canadian and international students with a research interest in contemporary Ukraine who are pursuing graduate studies at the University of Ottawa. 

The University of Ottawa will invest in the Kule endowment fund, as well as help to pay the annual salary of chair holder and expenses related to the 560 square foot office space used by the Chair of Ukrainian Studies.
